Greed

I

It all started with greed, didn't it?
That burning need for more
And hell, you came by it honest
Growing up with nothing, no safety net
Trained you to always be hunting
The next meal, the next deal, the next girl
But along the way something changed
You never even noticed when
It stopped being about survival
Hunger became gluttony
Loneliness became lust
You envied those out earning you
Nothing was ever enough
Your pride led to your sloth
Led to your wrath whenever you lost
Losing your path and paying the cost
Blood on your hands, can you see what you wrought?
The more that you threw at the hole deep inside
The greater the size of the void left to fill
Your fear of returning to nothing at all
Made you ready to lie and to cheat and to steal
You lived long enough to see yourself the villain
While swearing that you've just been misunderstood
Hording your treasures in coin and in pleasures
But never content with the taste of your food.
